HOT AND COLD

MAY 23, 2010
by: Phillip Barry, DPL Commissioner and Champion
When play began for session 4 of the 2010 DPL season, concern was starting to creep in that it may not have been the best idea to host the game in the garage. The garage has no AC, but when the garage door is opened partially and the back door is open, a draft is created that will cool the space. We all soon realized that the draft was non existant. The warm weather did not bother the play for Tom Basil, Tom was still riding his good play from March when he won game 2 of the March session. Tom was getting good flops when he was in the big blind and had no pre flop raisers, flops such as, 2-4-6 when he is holding 3-5. As the game got down to the top four, Tom began to catch the premium hands of A-A a couple times. Tom defeated Aric Lee heads up to win game 1. Along with Tom and Aric, the other two finishers in the top 4 were myself and Steve Larry.

As the temperature outside began to climb into the 90's and the breeze was not blowing. It was time to move indoors. While playing in the air conditioned basement, the top two finishers from game one, went out as the first two for game 2. The story of the year has been the battle between Chad Haynes and Tom Basil. After winning the first game, Tom had pulled ahead of Chad in the top spot in the standings. Chad had went out early in game one. Being that Tom went out early in game 2, this gave Chad a chance to regain the top spot. Chad was able to play a steady game and got to heads up playing with new DPL member, Troy Hayes. When Chad kept raising all-in, Troy decided to make a stand and called with K-6 off. Chad happened to have a A-10 and was able to double up, and cripple Troy in the process. Troy never was able to bounce back and Chad had won another game in the Decatur Poker League. Along with Chad and Troy, the other two finishers in the top 4 were Steve Larry and Bob Burtschi.
