WINNING WITH SNOWMEN AND WALKING STICKS

SEPTEMBER 13, 2009
by: Phillip Barry, DPL Commissioner and Champion
The first game of the September 2009 session had 14 players in attendance. There were 13 players at the start of the game, and one player had called to notify me that he was running a bit late, but to put him in. Keith arrived before the first break. This late arrival did not detour Keith from the task of winning the first game as he outlasted the 13 others and beating Larry Meek heads up. When Larry and Keith started the head’s up match, Larry had a large chip stack in comparison to Keith. After a few double ups, Keith took the lead and sealed the win with , the pocket snowmen held up against Larry Meek’s .

The second game of the September 2009 session had 12 players in attendance, Amisha and Alastair had to depart early. With the blinds going up every 10 minutes in the second game, play is a bit faster paced. Larry Meek took that to a whole new level as he was the first to be eliminated in the second game after a few hands. He would have been eliminated on the second hand, but he was left with $25 after he lost the hand. He was done in shortly after. Steve Seman was crippled after the same hand that Larry was nearly eliminated on. The beneficiary of that hand was Bob Burtschi. Bob fresh off of his Beer Can Collector Convention, was ready to win with his quickly forming wall of chips. What does beer can collecting have to do with this story….. Ah nothing really, just noting that Bob attend the convention in Springfield.

Back to the action recap, Bob eliminated most of the field in route to winning the second game. Once we were down to the final nine, I was getting short stacked and looked down at pocket snowmen. I raised the pot in early position and it was folded to Bob. Bob made the call and then it was folded back to the big blind. John Widmer in the big blind came over the top and pushed all-in. At this point I was ready to make the call, but thought for a minute. John is short stacked himself, so what hand would he push with? A-K through A-9? Pocket pair? I like my here, and then I looked across the table at the double wall o chips in front of the remaining player to act behind me. I still hand enough to make it through a few more blinds, so I decided to lay down what I thought was the best hand pre-flop. Burtschi made the call to put Widmer all-in. The cards were turned up and John had and was up against walking sticks, . I was correct that my 8’s were best, but that changed when the hit the flop. Nothing came on the turn and river to help John, and Bob slayed another player. He would have eliminated me, had I called with the best hand pre-flop.

Once Bob got heads up with Chad, he came across those nice walking sticks again, . This time he was behind in the hand again against Chad’s pocket dimes, . The flop hit and Bob took home the win. For Bob those walking sticks should have been name whopin sticks.
