CAN YOU SAY "RUNNING GOOD", AGAIN

JANUARY 8, 2012
by: Phillip Barry, DPL Commissioner and Champion
When I wrote the article in June 2011 it was almost the exact title as this article, however the outcome happened to get a little better for Terry this time around.  Last June Terry finished 1st and 2nd in the two game session, this time he became the fourth person to sweep a session with two wins.  The best way to win a game is to build a large chip stack before getting to the final table and Terry did just that in both games.  In the first game when we were down to 13 players, Terry was in the big blind, when the pot was raised to him, he decided to play.  After calling the raise, there were two others after Terry to make the call pre-flop.  The flop came .  Bob Willenborg checked from the small blind, Terry checked from the large blind.  Being low on chips and having , I pushed all-in for my remaining $8,600.  Pete Kates made the call, followed by Bob pushing all-in for his remaining $6,200, Terry then pushed all-in for an additional amount.  Pete didn't like his hand anymore, but being invested this far and having Terry covered, Pete went for the triple knock out.  I flipped my , Pete has , Bob had , and Terry revealed .  Terry was in the lead with 2 pair and after the turn of and a river of a , Terry more than tripled up.  After building a large amount of chips after knocking out two players, Terry went to the final table to give most of those acquired chips to Keith Watrous after losing with a straight to Keith's larger straight.  However, Terry managed to hang in there and claw his way to heads up against Keith.  Shortly after, Terry would become the first winner of the 2012 season.  Other than Terry and Keith, Steve Larry and Mike Patterson rounded out the top four for game 1.

Game two started with 13 players and Terry built his chip stack from another early hand that gave him a larger full house over Tom Basil and a straight to Pete Kates.  As the final table began losing one player after another, it seemed that Terry's chip stack just continued to grow.  If Terry called and all-in, he caught the right cards on the turn or the river to knock players out.  When he got heads up with Bob Burtschi, the turn and river continued to bring Terry the needed cards to win.  On the last hand, Terry was first to act, he looked at Bob and said, "I'm putting you all-in".  When Bob peaked at his cards, he was happy to call.  Terry flipped over and Bob turned over .  The flop came , and the harshness came with the turn of a , thus counterfeiting Bob's fours.  Bob had to hope for an Ace or King to chop the pot, or a four to win the pot on the river, none of which came.  Terry joined Chad Haynes and Pat Horve and the only active members to sweep a session with two wins.  Other than Terry and Bob, Pat Horve and Steve Larry round out the top four for game 2.

As the commissioner of the league, if Terry continues to run this good, I may have to start performing random testing.......for traces of Lucky Charms.
