The Decatur Poker League members are a good group of players. The league rules only allow new members through referrals from other DPL members. The referral system allows DPL members to refer friends and family members that they feel are good poker players and are honest human beings. Tom Basil was a referral at the end of the 2009 season.
During the June 13, 2010 session, Tom demonstrated those good qualities. When play got down to the top three, Tom did what most of us believe that everyone in our league would do, he made good on a bad situation. The blinds were 4,000 and 8,000 with a 500 ante. Tom was 1st to act, and he raised. I looked down at in the small blind. I didn't have many chips compared to the other two and went all-in. Steve Larry was in the big blind and folded. Tom thought about it for a minute and reluctantly made the call with . He had been catching cards in these moments all year and it didn't stop on this hand as Tom caught a on the turn and won the hand, but.....
The blue cards were raked. Since I was now out of the game, I decided to deal for Tom and Steve. As Tom was shuffling the blue deck that was just raked, I grabbed the red deck that had already been shuffled and began to give them one more shuffle before dealing them. As I shuffled the red deck, it was noticed that the red deck had several blue deck cards mixed in. Meaning that the previous was determined to be a mis-deal and dead. Tom returned my chips and Steve's chips and we re-played the hand. I again got a and went all-in and again Tom called me. I won the hand and went on to win the game as well.
I commend Tom for his honesty and making good on a accidental situation. That is why I'm proud to play poker with everyone on the Decatur Poker League.
