The 2011 Decatur Poker League is underway.  Would we have someone get off to a huge lead, or will this season be a close race the whole way?  Either way, every season has been enjoyable for all members, and 2011 should be no different.

The first game got underway at 12:00 pm, sharp.  A new year's resolution for the DPL is to start every session on time.  When the clock started, two registered player, Britt and Krystal Sturgeon, had not yet arrived.  They did arrive before getting hit with their first blind.  The first game at John's had a DPL record 19 players.  The upstairs table had nine (9) players and the downstairs table had 10 players, but before the end of the third blind level, the upstairs table was sending the next big blind down after the downstairs table had already eliminated three (3) players.  Play continued with two (2) tables until there were 10 players. When everyone assembled at the final table, I noticed that the big stack was Terry Wolpert.  Terry was only able to play partially in 2010, but we hope to see more of him in 2011.  Terry continued his solid play that helped him build that chip lead, and with a good race here and there, Terry knocked out more players and rode the chip wave to heads up play against Bob Burtchi.  Terry was able to take down Bob in heads up play for the 1st victory of 2011 and his 1st ever on the Decatur Poker League.  Other than Terry and Bob B., the others in the top 5 were Bob W., Pat, and myself.

The second game had the same 19 player and the same table setup to start.  This time the upstairs table began eliminating players early and thus caused players from downstairs to move upstaris.  As the game went to 10 players and the final table was set, Terry had nice chip stack like the 1st game, but he was unable to win his races later on.  I was in one of those races and I too was not so fortunate.  I pushed all-in and was called by Krystal and Terry.  I flipped over , Krystal flipped over , and Terry had .  When the flop came , I was feeling good about my lead.  The turn brought a , and with Krystal having more chips than me, I was needing one of the remaining two jacks, but missed on the river .  Krystal's win gave her a nice stack, but she to was unable to ride the chips to victory.  Instead, Steve Larry, was able to win the most key races and build a heafty chip lead in heads up play against Pete.  After only two hands into heads up play, Pete moved all-in and Steve loosely called.  Steve had live cards with his against Pete's .  After the flop brough , Steve was the clear favorite to win after this flop.  The turn was no help, , but the river gave Steve the winning flush.  This was Steve's 3rd win on the DPL.  Other than Steve and Pete, the others in the top 5 were Mike, Chad, and Terry.
