The 8th session of the 2010 DPL season showed us that you anyone can win on the DPL. If you look at this years and past standing, you'll notice that the same top players seem to win a lot, but the DPL does one thing for all of its players, allows them to get better. One of it's newest members, Britt Sturgeon, showed the league that when he gets good cards, he knows what to do with them. When the field was down to 7 players, Britt started to get quality hands at the right moments. I was UTG +1 (2nd to act pre-flop), and I heard Bob Willenborg announce raise UTG, I looked down at and wanted to eliminate Bob myself and thus decided to push my decent stack all-in. I debated in my head about wanting to just re-raise and see what happened after, but the words All-In flowed from my lips. I barely finished saying All-In when I heard Britt, say I call, thus an insta-call. At that moment I realized that I mis-played my Queens. Action folded around and before turning the cards over I new that I was up against . Britt's Aces knocked me and my Queens out in 7th. After being eliminated from the first game, I then heard Britt insta-call and win with pockets while being heads-up against Mike Patterson. Other than Britt and Mike, Pat Horve and Keith Watrous finished in the top 4.
The 2nd game started with one extra player that the first game, as Steve Larry was unable to attend the first game. Back to the point I made earlier about the same players winning over and over. If you looked at the game 2 finishes of the league point leaders for this season, you would be shocked. The top 4 in the current standings finsihed 12th, 14th, 13th, and 10th. This league is a league that you have to be on your game, every game. One of those players on his game, after being away from the league due to work, Pat Horve was ready to take down his first DPL win. Like Britt in the 1st game, Pat acquired pocket Aces late in the game against to all-in players and rode the wave of chips to heads-up play against Bob Burtschi. Early in heads up play Pat looked down at , and when Bob pushed All-In, Pat called, and his pockets dueces lost. In a matter of three hands later, Pat looked down at , again, and when Bob moved All-In again. Pat's dueces were able to hold on the second time around and win game two. Other than Pat and Bob, Paul Horve, David Kates, and Bob Willenborg, rounded out the top 5. |
