Everyone who knows No Limit Texas Holdem, knows that prior to dealing a flop, you must have a burn card. Hence the phrase, Burn and Turn. Of course when there is an exposed card during the deal, the exposed card becomes the burn card, and thus there is no need to burn an extra card prior to the flop.
During session 7 of the 2010 DPL season, I found myself in this very situation of having exposed a card during the deal. I should have pulled the exposed card and put it on top of the deck to signify to myself that this is the burn card. Well, I didn't do this and thus I burned an extra card and gave the players in the hand a flop. Immediately after the flop, I realized I had burned an extra card and informed the players. When I reached for the extra burn card it was close the mucked cards. After turning over the card, another player committed that they had the same card, but after checking the mucked cards, the player realized that this was not their card. Now the four players in the hand realized that not only did they see two oops cards due to the dealing issues, they now realize that there is another card out of the mix. At this point it is asked if the four players in the hand would like to replay this hand, and they all agreed.
After a shuffle and a new deal to the four players in the hand, the flop was about to be dealt. I started to count of three cards for the flop, when another player, not in the hand, stopped me before turning any cards over because he noticed that I had not burned a card. Suddenly I realized that this was correct and I stopped. I burned a card and then gave the flop. However, my dealing issues for the hand was enough for players to razz me the rest of the session.
I found myself watching others emphasize the burn card while dealing hand the rest of the day. Players would crisply snap the burn cards and look directly at me. I get it. The next player would announce, "Burn" as the burned a card, while looking at me. I get it. Finally, when almost all players were doing the same antic, I started to reply, "I don't know what you talking about."
