In the past friends would
get together and play their odd games, Low Guts, High
Guts, Seven Card Stud (Nothing Wild), and list goes
on and on. Poker began to grow after the boom of Chris
Moneymaker. The game that everyone has
grown to play more often than not is No Limit Texas
Hold'Em.
Phillip, DPL creator,
began to think about the concept of a poker league. Wouldn't
it be fun to have a poker league that gives points
to players for every game? Sure. Thus, at the end
of the season, the player that accumulated the most
points would be deemed the champion for that year.
After running the idea
past fellow DPL member John (Phillip's father), John
felt that many of his poker buddies would not be in
favor of such a poker league, as they probably enjoyed
their monthly home game much more. This was pure speculation
on John's part. To prove his point, Phillip
asked his father to host a Saturday night game of
No Limit Texas Hold'Em, tournament style, with no
re-buys or add-ons. John and Phillip joined
forces and got a decent amount of players assembled
to have a game. After the game was over and prior
to all the players departing for the evening, the
concept of the poker league was announced. Believe
or not, John's speculation was debunked. All
players were in favor of the idea, and thus the Decatur
Poker League was founded in 2008.
The league is a way
for friends to get together and sharpen their poker
skills. The league was not created as
an avenue for anyone to make money. All games are
friendly games and players are always anxious to see
the updated standings after each session.
